E-Energy - Smart Grids made in Germany
A funding programme of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) in an interministerial partnership with the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU).
Climate change, the rapid surge in energy demand and dwindling natural resources present Germany with major challenges in the field of energy supply. Industry and politics must work hand in hand in future to secure an economical and environmentally compatible supply of power for all public and private sectors.
Up to now, there has been little common ground between energy efficiency and information technology - a state of affairs which is now set to change. The current objective is to create an "Internet of Energy". The BMWi has coined the phrase "E-Energy" for this new field of innovation. As in the case of E-Commerce or E-Government, the term stands for the comprehensive digital networking and optimization of the energy supply system, encompassing everything from generation and distribution right up to consumption. The project will ensure more effective utilization of the existing supply infrastructure, expand the use of renewable energy resources and reduce CO2 emissions.
Etelligence helps to save energy
In Cuxhaven the research project eTelligence was successfully completed. In essence in the last four years eTelligence tried to link power producers and electricity consumers intelligently in order to integrate the fluctuating electricity from renewable sources like wind and solar optimally into the grid.

E-world Congress "E-Energy: Smart Grids made in Germany"
E-World, Europe’s leading energy and water management industry fair, took place in Essen (Germany) for the 12th time. It serves as a platform for business activities, networking and matchmaking opportunities between electricity suppliers, municipal utilities, industrial users, municipalities and service suppliers. The latest trends - including energy efficiency, smart homes and especially smart grids - were addressed by exhibitors and organizers alike.
Conference: Smart Grids Week - Bregenz 2012
The ongoing discussions about climate change and the increasing criticism regarding the option of nuclear power give decentralized renewable power generation technologies a world wide boost. While technology competition is in full swing, Austria’s smart grids community is engaged in European initiatives, such as the Smart Grids D-A-CH cooperation and ERA-Net and internationally in the ISGAN activities.
